In 2004, I was very much against Bush being re-elected based on the fact that 1. I didnt then and never really did trust or like him. 2. I have never believed he wanted to be President to help the American people. I believe it was ALL about ego and having power. 3. I wanted us out of Iraq...theres too much there to go on about, but you get what I mean I am sure. 4. I was embarrassed he was our President and saddened by the fact that the world thought so little of us by that point in time.
So what did I do? I canvassed on election day, in the rain among other things. But that day, I was sure Kerry would win. So sure that I made a comment to my new friend Tracy, that I really hope Obama would run in 2012.
First of all, if you didnt know, the day after the election I was in a terrible state of mind. I went to see my councelor that day for a regularly scheduled appointment and I simply sat and cried for 30 minutes. I felt all hope had been lost. I believed that the war would wage on and Bush and his cabinet would only bring further shame and bad things for America. Now, I am not going to say 'I told you so" but that is essentially what happened.
In 2000, McCain was my guy! I wanted to vote for McCain to be prez so bad! Sadly though it was Bush so I didnt get to vote for him. There was no way though I was going to vote for him this time. I cast my vote for Obama/Biden and I am estatic the way the results came in last night! Look at that map! Obama won states in all the regions of the country! Talk about unification. I woke up this morning feeling HOPEFUL and that is the exact OPPOSITE of how I felt the day after the election four years ago. I had lost hope and now it is found. I am so excited, happy and proud to be associated with the American people this time around. I dont care if you voted for McCain, that is your choice. I just hope that if you did, you will not feel the way I did in 2004 and that you rejoyce in the idea that 40 years after the US government turned dogs and water hoses on black men and women for simply wanting to be allowed to walk down the sidewalk instead of in the street, for wanting to use the same drinking fountains as white Americans, for wanting the right to vote and not have the fear of being killed for whistling at a woman. I hope you rejoyce in the fact that a man with the same color skin as those people was elected President of the US.
There is now a before and after. Celebrate that you lived through it!
